Protest Day

Panic belly

Anxious mind

Quiet it with deep gulps of coffee, two squares of dark chocolate.

It doesn't quiet it, it distracts it.

Last minute make a sign.

A woman's body, a woman's choice on one side, pro-vasectomy on the other. Annabel helps decorate it.

Quick quick get there on time speeding a little

The eye of the tiger on the radio - really.

Find 2 spaces next to each other in the parking garage, descend together.

Walk on the street, first holding the sign beside me, then in front

We see the signs ahead, follow them to the courthouse

Hear the cheers and honks and maybe this won't be so bad

We find a space to stand, see our friends, join them on the corner and listen.

Watch, read. Be seen.

These are all just people. They are human.

This is kind of fun?

The woman in front of me comments on the silent car next to her; "pussy-haters."

I stand alone, together with men and women and a few kids, students, pets. My daughter and husband go for the shade, walk along the concrete wall, her toy dog trailing behind her.

My husband joins me, our friend sits in the shade with the kids. He holds the sign beside me.

I stood up for what I believe in, and I was supported by my family and friends. I've upheld my values and stated my boundaries and I didn't die. My panic and anxiety breathe a sigh of relief. We have enchiladas for dinner that night.
